Domaine Porto Carras is
the largest organic Greek vineyard
Domaine Porto Carras is the largest organic Greek vineyard with total area 500 hectares. The idea of reviving this area around 60s, deciding to utilize all the potential of the valuable dowry that nature had bestowed on the unique western costs of Sithonia was the mark point of Greek oenology.
The hilly areas in the region create excellent ecological conditions for cultivating the 28 selective local and foreign varieties that thrive on the south-western slopes.
For centuries now the land of Halkidhiki has been verdant with vineyards and olive groves .In the beginning of 1965, the first vineyards and olive groves were planted. Domaine Porto Carras wines, named throughout the known world bearing the place names Toroni, Acanthus and Olympus, and referred to in many texts of past ages, were the forerunners of the resent-day wines from the Slopes of Mt. Meliton region, now recognized as wines with Protected Designation of Origin (P.D.O.) “Meliton Slopes”.
The vineyards were designed by university professors from Thessaloniki School of Agronomy and Athens Vine & Wine Institute in an exemplary manner. For the first time a systematic study was carried out on the suitability of foreign varieties in Greece. The forests of western costs of Sithonia constitute a natural barrier, trapping the evening atmospheric moisture which helps the vines withstand the hot days of summer.
Today the “Slopes of Mt. Meliton” vineyards are a model of organic viniculture, in line with modern international trends, respecting the consumer and the environment. Thanks to the exceptional climate conditions prevailing in the area, the Domaines’ vineyards are today considered to be one of the rarest cases where most vine diseases are confronted with organic processes.
The Winery was built in 1970 and along with the Vineyards, set a milestone in the Greek wine industry. Its location was chosen to be invisible to the passer, both from the road and the sea, so as to protect the beauty of the landscape.
It is also worth mentioning the significance of the contribution of the father of modern wine-making, Professor of the University of Bordeaux, Emile Peynaud, who assisted in developing the first “Greek” Cabernet Sauvignon. The Greek” Cabernet Sauvignon ideally adapted to the chalky and schistose soils of the Domaine, allows the variety to achieve winning coveted awards, prizes and medals.
The first wine of Domaine Porto Carras, Blanc De Blancs took its name from Salvador Dali, the famous artist and regular visitor of Domaine Porto Carras. In addition, Domaine Porto Carras is the winery that revived one of the most promising Greek varieties, the famous Malagouzia. Also, the location of the Winery, at the centre of the Vineyard, helps the fast delivery and the processing of the grapes, aiming at maintaining the quality dynamics and to avoid oxidation.

The Wines

Chateau Le Grand Blanc 2015
Dry White Wine
PGI Sithonia
The definition of a “big” white wine, by the Porto Carras team. Blanc de noir Limnio is added to the successful duo of Assyrtiko and Malagousia, to create a wine that matures on fine lees in new French oak barriques for 9 months. The result is superb: a wine with remarkable complexity in the nose and profound richness on the palate with a subtle spicy finish. Suitable for aging; ideal to pair with grilled fish and smoked seafood delicacies.

Malagouzia 2015
Dry White Wine
PGI Halkidiki
“The revival of the genuine expression” is what it says on the label, and that’s exactly what this wine delivers. Domaine Porto Carras is where Malagousia was first vinified and their experience of decades truly shows. This is a delightful white wine that oozes floral and summer fruit aromas in the nose, while on the palate it’s elegant and crisp, with perfect acidity. Ideal to enjoy by the glass or paired with equally aromatic Mediterranean dishes.

Assyrtiko 2015
Dry White Wine
PGI Chalkidiki
Fans of Assyrtiko will be thrilled with this organic wine from the Porto Carras team. Old vines and low yields bring out an interesting approach to the grapes typicity: lemony notes set against a clearly mineral background on the nose, while the palate is fresh, crisp and savory. This wine is made for fish and seafood lovers, as it will give them endless pairing opportunities: shellfish, seafood tartare and/or ceviche, deep-fried calamari or whitebait etc.

Limneon 2014
Dry Red Wine
PDO Meliton Slopes
“LimNeon” is a wordplay that aims to show that this is the grape Limnio, with a twist. Indeed, this wine is exactly what it promises on the (back) label: “Modern wine making of the oldest recorded Greek grape variety”. LimNeon is an elegant red wine, generous in aromas of ripe red fruit and sweet spices in the nose, and silky and long on the palate. Ideal with honey glazed pork, barbecue ribs and oriental takes on beef.
