Our philosophy at the Manousakis Winery is just as simple.
We believe in carefully and organically cultivating our vines
to absorb this scent-filled terroir.

manousakis-logoOver the millennia the Lefka Ori Mountains of Western Crete have absorbed the quiet lifecycle for thousands of the island’s native flora.

Walking these mountains in the spring is a sensory adventure filled with the scents of rosemary, thyme, sage, lavender, and chamomile. In the fall, they descend back to the soil and are absorbed. The quiet lifecycle continues.

Our philosophy at the Manousakis Winery is just as simple. We believe in carefully and organically cultivating our vines to absorb this scent-filled terroir. The flavors of the grapes combine with the herbs for a truly unique taste. Each bottle of Nostos captures the character of this verdant island, and the slopes of the Lefka Ori.

The Manousakis Winery is the culmination of one man, its founder Theodore Manousakis. Ted, as he is more commonly called, was born in the village of Vatolakkos in 1943. He left his village eleven years later, into an unknown future.

America: The Promised Land. For an enterprising young man, the possibilities were endless. After university, Ted was successful in a number of business endeavors including industrial security, real estate development, and hospitality. But success came at a price: the near loss of his Cretan heritage.

The Return: Nostos is the yearning to come home. It propelled Ted to the land of his birth, and on a higher level than mere visitor. He wanted to give something back to the island that he loved. Wine was a way of life in the village and a memory from his boyhood. There was no better way to pay homage to those traditions and it brought people together to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Soil, sun, weather conditions and yearning converged to perfection. The Manousakis Winery was born and the first vineyards planted in 1993.

The Wines

Manousak_2mazi

2 Mazi 2014

Dry Red Wine

Two Cretan wineries and two local grapes unite to produce a wine as a joint effort (2 Mazi means “2 together” in Greek) – and all that for a very noble cause: to support the efforts of a well-known Greek charity organisation that’s dedicated to Rehabilitation for The Disabled. The wine’s nose is vibrant and intense, with notes of sweet fruit and liquorice, while the palate is smooth and well balanced. Enjoy with a selection of cheeses and cold cuts.

Nostos Alexandra’s 2014

Dry Red Wine

When a winemaker or winery owner names a wine after his daughter, he usually has a good reason. This wine is named after Alexandra Manousakis, who now runs the Estate with her husband, and is as gentle and pleasant as she is. Dark fruit aromas with hints of cocoa and spicy meat prevail in the nose, while the palate is silky, with good balance and length. This is a good wine to pair with lamb dishes, ideally in spicy sauces inspired by ethnic cuisines.

Nostos Grenache 2014

Dry Red Wine

This is officially one of the best Grenache wines in the world, as its previous vintage was awarded a silver medal in the Grenaches du Monde completion, last year, in Spain. The 2014 boasts a typical spicy nose with unusually meaty nuances, while the palate is very intense, with lots of different levels and a savory aftertaste. This is a challenge to pair, but would go perfectly with serious poultry (e.g. guinea fowl, duck) or small game.

Nostos Blend 2013

Dry Red Wine

Nostos Blend is a popular best-seller ever since it came on the market, and this is no surprise. Crete’s answer to a “modern Chateauneuf-du-Pape” is a very well made, rich red wine that oozes fruits and sweet spices in the nose, while on the palate it’s beautifully full yet round, with velvety tannins and a long, lingering aftertaste. It’s organic, unfiltered and definitely destined to accompany strong red meat (game, lamb, goat) recipes.

Nostos Syrah 2014

Dry Red Wine

For quite a few years now, the Domaine Manousakis team has been producing one of the top Syrah reds in Greece, and one which has a growing, loyal following. This is a powerful red, with a beautiful nose full of oriental spices and wild herbs of the Mediterranean countryside, while the palate is muscular, with dense tannins and excellent length. This wine screams for big game, buffalo steaks or wild goat, various, rich recipes.
