Vilana is considered the most important white skinned grape variety in terms of plantings on the island of Crete. It produces fresh, light-bodied wines that are easy to drink. The best expressions of the variety give wines that have a fragrant, floral, and fruity character, with aromas and flavors of white blossoms and citrus fruits. Wines from Vilana are usually varietal, with limited – if any – oak treatment during the winemaking, in order to protect this varietal character. However, some blends with other local grape varieties can also be encountered. Due to their light body, wines from Vilana are really enjoyable well-chilled “by the glass”, but are also perfectly paired with salads and other light dishes of Mediterranean cuisine.
