Vidiano is a fairly rare Cretan white-skinned grape variety. It almost became distinct, before it sparked a huge interest from local growers and consumers. Typical wines from Vidiano tend to be rich, with a medium to full body, and a wide spectrum of aromas and flavours that range from citrus fruits, stone fruits – peach and apricot – to tropical fruits. It also has light mineral notes. Vidiano wines are usually varietal, although many producers create blends with other local or international grape varieties. The variety takes well to oak, so there are many examples of Vidiano wines that undergo some oak treatment. The use of oak tends to add some sweet and spicy aromas. Because of its richness, Vidiano is a “food friendly” wine. It matches perfectly with grilled or baked fish and white sauces.
