Mavro Messenikola red grape is unique to the Messenikola village, near Plastiras lake in Karditsa, where it is grown in an area of less than 100 hectares in tota, at high altitude. The region endures heavy winters and mild summers.
Mavro Messenikola is usually paired with the international varieties Syrah and Carignan to produce the red PDO Messenikola wine. On its own, it produces dark red wines with intense aromas of red and sour cherry, and medium body.
While not very age-worthy, it can be a great match with dishes featuring rich meat like buffalo and big game.
