Begleri is a rare – almost unknown – white-skinned grape variety grown mainly on the Aegean island of Ikaria. It gives fresh, light-bodied wines with moderate alcohol and acidity levels. Begleri wines tend to be fruity, with aromas and flavours that remind of citrus and tropical fruits, complemented with some mineral notes. Begleri is usually un-oaked and blended with other local grape varieties, although varietal expressions can also be found. Its fresh, light and well balanced character makes it very pleasant as aperitif, but it also pairs nicely with cold starters, salads, and many light dishes.
